Mental Illness Awareness Week
Today marks the start of Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 7–13, a time to come together to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for equal care. NAMI and NAMI Sarasota County will feature #CureStigma and #MentalHealthJourneys on social media and our website.
Mental illness is a medical condition, but it is often surrounded by stigma or stereotypes that prevent people from getting the help they need. One in five adults experiences a mental illness in any given year. Approximately half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by the age of 14. Unfortunately, long delays—sometimes decades—can occur between the time symptoms first appear and when people get help. Early identification and treatment are critical.
NAMI Sarasota County offers support, education, and serves as a resource for individuals living with mental illness, their families and caregivers throughout the county. Information about NAMI Sarasota County, mental illness conditions, symptoms and treatment is available at www.namisarasotacounty.org or by calling 941-376-9361.
