Saying Farewell to a NAMI Advocate
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our member and volunteer coordinator, Linda Grimes. Linda passed away peacefully at home with her family on August 2, 2019. Linda had been an active member of NAMI Sarasota County working on our fundraising committee for the Out of the Blue and An Emerald Evening events. Her son Joe was the person who suggested that we hold our inaugural fundraiser Out of the Blue at Sarasota Architectural Salvage. This was a great success and sold more than 400 tickets! She worked tirelessly collecting sponsorship and items for the raffle and generously donated her condo on Captiva as an auction item.
Linda took NAMI’s Family to Family class in September 2017. She was so grateful for the insight and friendship that the class offered that she volunteered to work on outreach so that our programs reached more people. She worked for the last year as our volunteer coordinator, calling people who reached out to NAMI to volunteer and organizing events to get volunteers together, brief them on our programs, and identify ways that they could assist.
Linda worked hard all her life, raising her two sons as a single parent for part of their lives. She lost her husband Mike, who she described as the love of her life, in May 2018 to cancer, taking care of him at home for much of the time. Despite these hardships Linda was unrelentingly positive and generous to her family and friends. She is survived by her twin sons Danny and Joe.
